Hair loss can be an embarrassing and upsetting problem for both men and women. We all lose around 50-100 hairs a day but for some people this hair loss can be more frequent. Excessive hair loss or thinning of the hair can occur for many reasons. - Androgenetic alopecia, (also known as male pattern baldness). The causes of this are not completely known but it is believed to involve both genetic and hormonal factors. - Androgenetic alopecia, (also known as female pattern alopecia). This is the most common type of hair loss seen in women. Like men, it is seen as hair thinning, predominately over the top and front of the head. One common cause of female hair loss is a hormone imbalance, which can begin as early as puberty. It can often occur after pregnancy or after discontinuation of birth control pills. Hair loss can also happen after a sudden physical or psychological stress to the body. - Alopecia areata usually seen as patchy hair loss – its cause is not completely understood. It has been thought to be the result of the bodies immune system attacking the hair follicle. - Traction alopecia. This type of hair loss results from continued pull on the hair from certain hair styles. - Trichotillomania, (compulsive hair pulling and twisting). It is believed this is due to traumatic life events, unresolved psychological conflicts or neurological abnormalities. The symptoms often increase in times of stress. Other causes of hair loss can include poor nutrition, skin damage, some medications, illness, surgery and certain medical treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy. But for whatever reason a person suffers hair loss it can leave them feeling embarrassed, unattractive and with a loss of self esteem and self confidence.
